Meet George

George was at the crossroads. He had a squiggly career with varied and multiple roles. He was in the middle of some major life changes, and felt directionless.

He wanted to be more purposeful in his next career move, instead of feeling like he was just ‘trying on’ the next role, to see if it fit him.

While he was confident and comfortable with his life, within his career he felt like an unanchored boat, just floating in whatever direction the current took him.

He did not know which direction to go in, or what he was aiming for.

When George reached out to me, he initially thought it was to help him get out of his career rut and into the next level role via promotion. As we began talking, we both realised that while this was possibly what was expected, this may not be the best move for George’s life and happiness. His current industry was a means to an end, not his calling or his purpose in life. So while George was letting life pull him along in his job, it did not give him purpose or make him happy. He was not connected or motivated.

We started with grounding. We breathed together, letting out the stress of the current moment.

We explored Georges likes and dislikes, his passions, his motivations. We discussed his wide range of previous roles and found the cross over connection points, seeking the pattern.

Over a series of sessions, we discovered George’s Ikigai – his reason for being. Or in other words, his purpose. We brainstormed what he was good at, what he loves, what the world needs, what he could be paid for and all of the intersection points between.

We then discussed paths to purpose: different ways to reaching the end goal revealed by the exercise. We brought in life constraints such as money and location to determine different plans of action, depending upon what emerged in the future, and what opportunities came up for George.

After just 2 sessions, George realised the benefits of his squiggly career and no longer felt that he was destined to drift from role to role without meaning and purpose.

After 4 sessions, George had a purpose to aim for and multiple directions to get there.

He was grounded, felt stable and confident he was headed in the direction he wanted to go in.

He had found his direction.
